I have just recently joined Delhi photography club and we went on a Heritage walk to the Old fort. Now Old fort in Delhi is also known as Purana Qila and is located at the site of legendary city Indraprastha. Its not only the oldest fort among all the forts in Delhi but also the oldest known structure of any type in Delhi. Researchers now confirmed that till 1913, a village called Indraprat existed within the fort walls. So, the fort is also considered to be the first city of Delhi.
The main entrance has got this rustic thick wooden door:
On entering the main gate, there is a huge garden, very well maintained by the Department of Tourism. The view looks like this:
On further walking ahead there is a single domed, Qila-i-kuna mosque, built by Sher shah in 1541.
The interiors of the mosque :
On the right side of the Mosque there is a Sher mandal, named so after Farid ( Sher Shah ). Its a double storeyed octagonal tower of red sand stone with steep stairs leading upto the roof.
This was also the tragic spot where on 24 january 1556, Humayun fell from the second floor to his death. He slipped while hastening to the evening prayers, following his hobby of astronomical star gazing at the top of this private observatory. It was also used as a library.
